The Dunes Resort Formerly: Douglas Dunes

(43 Ratings)
Only place in town for a true 'gay bar' thumpa thumpa
Whet your whistle at the patio bar known as the Tea Deck, or wet your bod at the pool. Dance the night away in the Disco, or quench your craving for camp at the Cabaret. And if none of that sounds appealing, you can get your game on in the newest game room bar overlooking the deck and dance floor.

It Is What It Is

There really isn't that much more to say about this place. My friend Brian invited me here for Labor Day Weekend 2008 and before I agreed to go he described it as "kinda trashy, but fun." Well, he was absolutely right. The Dunes is a gay resort with a motel, pool, and huge dancehall housing several bars and a cabaret (although no drag shows, which I would have preferred over the lounge singers). DJ David Knapp and DJ Joe Gauthreaux both played, making each night lots of fun while I was there. The thing I found most entertaining (although I only observed) was that the basement of one of the motel buildings was converted into... well... a bath house. "Rooms" are available pretty cheap and you get a bed, a table, and an ashtray. If you don't want to splurge, most guys could actually be found out back in the woods. Yes. The woods. :) Go. Have fun. Just don't expect much (and bring your bug spray... it's amazingly useful even if you don't decide to get lost in the trees).

bizzzzyyy

The physical plant is very nice, big, and spread out ... well maintained ... with choices in rooms ranging from bunk room to 3 star quality ... nice pool (with a busy bar summer weekend afternoons and some evenings in the week), friendly people. The bar area has many "environments" ranging from the thumpa-thumpa to a caberet ... The crowd tends to be a mix of city boys and older city-boi-wannabees. The only downside is that the prices are very high - but maybe that is because their season is so short.

A Bit of a Let Down

Large bar but no energy. Saugatuck is NOT the P Town of the midwest. Two nights is more than enough. Only Gay scene is here. Pool durung the day is pleasant. Saugatuck and Douglas are pretty straight though a number of gay business owners.
